Handwritten quote tattoo on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink quote tattooed on the upper arm, with the words "its is my life" in uneven, handwritten-style script and a second line reading "~Jon Bovi" below. The linework is clean and even, with the letters softly soft-edged against the skin. The image is taken straight on with a plain, pale skin tone and no other colour.

Dear Tom, I have finally given up on the kitchen radio. Every morning Mrs Okonedo at number nine sings the same chorus over the back fence, and every morning she gets the second line wrong, and I have stopped correcting her. Last Tuesday she asked me to write the words out so she could get them right for the church choir. I scribbled them in capitals on the back of a gas bill, and somewhere between my pen and the paper the apostrophe went missing, the way things do when your hands are cold.

She held the bill up to the light from the scullery door, read it twice, and declared that was exactly how Dean Mavers sang it, so who was I to argue. The bill now hangs framed above her sink. The following week her grandson came to stay, sixteen and sullen, and he saw it and laughed until he had to sit down on the step. He said it looked like a line from a sad film. Then he borrowed my biro and inked the words onto the inside of his wrist to show his mates, and when they dried they sat lopsided and smudged, as if someone had written them in a hurry on a train.
Mrs Okonedo never minded the mistake. She told me a line you carry wrong is still a line you carry. Her grandson kept his wrist as it was, and on his birthday he told her that people at school kept asking what it meant. He said he didn't know, but it was his.
I've kept my own copy of the bill, though I'm not sure why. The apostrophe is still missing. Come round on Sunday and she'll sing it for you, wrong the way she always does, and you can join in on the second line.
