Two bare feet showing black script lettering reading Heels on the left heel and Down on the right heel, in a lettering style placed on the back of the heels.

Heels and Down script on two heels

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are photographed from behind, showing the heels. The left heel carries the word Heels and the right heel carries the word Down, both in flowing black script with a cursive, joined-up letter form. The ink is dark throughout against the skin, and the soft focus and shallow depth of field keep the background dark and out of focus.

I leaned on the gate and counted the fallen fruit, because counting gave my temper a place to sit.

She got up laughing, which was worse. She dusted off, gathered the reins in hands that smelt of crushed grass, and swung up again with her toes pointing at the sky like a swimmer off the board. "Heels down, Ruth," I called, and she did what every child does: she jammed her boots forward, then looked back over her shoulder to check I'd seen her being clever.

I told her what Mrs Pargeter told me, that riding is not in the hands or the knees but in a small stubborn weight that runs down the leg and out through the back of the foot, into the stirrup and the ground beneath it. You cannot lecture a heel into place. You can only keep asking, stride after stride, until the body gives up arguing. The cob, who had been waiting with the patience of a creature that has seen everything, dropped into a walk the moment she sat properly.

We walked the long way round the orchard, past the cider press with its wasps and the old ladder leaning against the wall. At the gate Ruth slid down, looked at her own boots as if they had betrayed her, and grinned. "Same time tomorrow?" she asked. I said yes, that the apples would still be there, and that she should bring a hat she intended to keep on.
