A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourselves down by the grate, the lot of you, and mind the damp on the settee, it has a mind of its own. You'll want the story about the lodger in the attic room, the one who paid in gold coins and never once came down to breakfast.

He called himself Mr Carrow's man, though nobody in Hollin Bay had heard of any Carrow, and he built his suits up under the roof where the gulls couldn't get at the tin. Red paint first, then gold leaf he bought off a bankrupt chandler in Whitby, and a stripe down the thigh as straight as a fishing line. Number after number he made them, MARK this and MARK that, painted on the plates so he'd know which one had cracked in the squall.

The last one he wouldn't let anybody touch. Every night at the turn of the tide I heard it humming through the floorboards, a blue sort of hum, the colour of the light under the pier. He'd set a little round reactor into its chest, a glowing thing that buzzed like a kettle thinking about boiling, and when the storm took the lamp off the headland that winter, it was that light the fishing boats steered by.

Then one morning the attic door stood open and the room was swept clean, with only a gold ring on the boards and a red streak where the sea had come in through the skylight. The coins were still on the mantel. I never did find out where he went. But on calm nights, if you lie still and listen, you can still hear it, humming under the sea.
