Traditional flash sheet of superhero designs
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
A flash sheet of six traditional-style tattoo designs on a cream, aged-paper background, scattered with small sparkle motifs. The designs include a hammer with lightning, a star-centred shield with a banner and rats, a helmet with a rose and banner, a spider with an eye and banner, and an eagle-like wing holding a cube. The linework is bold and black, with red, yellow, teal and green fills and soft speckled shading.

The mask arrived in a bin bag that smelled of diesel, dented on one cheek, with a crack running from brow to jaw. Mags Renwick had been paid cash to strip it down and ask no questions, so she set it on the bench under the strip light and began unscrewing the rivets one at a time.

Under the grime the red had worn to pink along the seams, and where the paint had flaked the metal showed a yellow so bright it looked wet. Her uncle had been a panel beater who would not let a dent go unhammered, and she heard his voice saying what he always said about gold, that it was only cheap yellow with a good opinion of itself. She found a tin of old enamel at the back of the shelf, mixed it to match, and spent three nights on the cheek with a fine brush, leaving the crack alone.
The client came on Friday, a man in a camel coat who turned the helmet over twice and asked whether it could be made to look new. Mags said it could be made to look finished. She had wired a rose from the florist's bucket and bound it to the jaw with red ribbon, and the petals were already browning at the edges.
He paid without haggling. When the bell over the door had stopped swinging, she went back to the bench, took the rose off, and pressed it into the crack, where the petals would dry and hold the seam together.
