Jack and Sally forearm tattoo with banner script

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon characters Jack Skellington and Sally side by side, with Jack's skull face on the left and Sally's pale face and red hair on the right. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading define the figures, with orange and grey swirls behind them and banner lettering at the top and bottom. The design wraps around a forearm and fills most of the frame against a blue background.

Sit nearer the stove, the lot of you, and don't let the lamp gutter, because the pass takes any light it can get. Ruth Garrow came up it the winter her brother went over for the mine wages and never came back down. She had a mule, a bad knee and a tin of boiled sweets, and nothing else the guards at the Scar Gate would have wanted.

At the top, where the wind has teeth, a man was waiting with a lantern wrapped in oilcloth. Nobody in the valley knew his name, though everyone knew his coat, which was stitched with white bones down the front like the ribs of a wreck. He asked where she was going. She said she was going after her brother. He said that was a fine answer, that she would have to say it again on the other side to a different man, and she had better mean it both times.

Then he said the thing the old smugglers used to tell the girls left behind: I'll follow you, and the dark is only a road nobody has walked yet. Ruth laughed at him. He did not laugh back. He turned his lantern down until it was a single blue coal and walked ahead into the snow.

She followed that coal for three hours. When it finally went out, she was standing at the edge of a lit town, and there on the inn step sat her brother, holding a lantern of his own and grinning like a fool. Nobody ever saw the guide again. But every winter a pale blue light sits at the top of the pass, and if you call out your own name up there, it calls it back.
