Sally and Jack tattoos on the hands
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest side by side against a black leather surface, each with a cartoon character tattoo on the back of the hand. The left tattoo shows Sally with a stitched face and long flowing hair, and the right shows Jack Skellington's head with a bony, spidery hand beneath it. Both designs use dark outlines and soft grey shading in black ink, with the figures set against bare skin.

Mabel had been stitching the same hem for three nights when the stranger knocked at the back door of the chandler's shop in Hebden Bridge. He stood on the step with a lantern whose glass was cut like a pumpkin, and his coat smelt of wet graveyard grass. He said his name was Oswin and that he had come about the ledger, the one that recorded every wish made in November, and that someone had written her name in it in pencil.

Mabel had no ledger. She had a drawer of mismatched buttons, a tin of thread, and a rag-stuffed woman she had made for her sister before the winter took her. The doll's cheeks were stitched across where the cloth had torn and been mended and torn again. Oswin looked at it for a long time. "She's been waiting for someone to finish her," he said. "Nobody finishes anything in this town."
They argued over tea. He wanted the ledger back. She wanted the doll's face left alone. He offered to pay in frost, which turned out to be a pinch of it in a paper twist that stayed cold in her palm. She offered him a digestive. By the second cup they had agreed the doll could stay as she was, half-mended, and that Oswin would sit on the step each November and tell her what the weather was doing on his side of the hills.
When the first hard frost came, Mabel found a pumpkin seed on the step beside a single black thread, the same colour as the stitches she had never got round to finishing. She pressed the seed into the windowsill, picked up her needle, and went back to the hem.
