Jack Skellington and Sally on forearms

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each carrying a tattoo of a character from The Nightmare Before Christmas. On the left, Jack Skellington stands tall with long limbs beside a small doghouse marked ZERO and a cross, with Zero the ghost dog peeking out. On the right, Sally stands in a patched dress with a dotted pattern and stitched details, beside a picket fence, with the work rendered in bold black linework and grey shading.

They came down the Marrow road at dusk, a tall man with a lantern on a pole and a small grey dog trotting at his heels. Sally watched them from the picket fence without putting down her needle, because the patch on her knee had nearly come loose and the light was going.

"You'll want directions," she said, "and you'll want a coat mended. Everyone who walks this road comes back to me with a tear somewhere." Jack straightened, which took a while, and said he had no use for mending, only the way to the crossroads, where he had been told a thing was waiting for him. Zero stared at the dark doorway of his little house and gave one hollow bark, the way a dog does when the wind has brought him news.

Sally said nobody could find the crossroads without leaving a stitch behind. So Jack unbuttoned the cuff of his long sleeve, took out a bone button, and handed it to her. She sewed it to the fence post with three careful loops, pulled the thread tight, and bit it off. The fence hummed faintly, the way a wire does before rain.

By morning the road had forgotten its own turnings, and the little house had a fresh row of stitches across its roof. Jack was gone, and the cross stood bright where the lantern had been. Sally walked back up the road with Zero at her side, humming, and the fence post still holds that bone button, sewn tight with three neat loops, waiting for someone foolish enough to come looking.
