Jack and Sally silhouettes on a spiral hill with quote

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two solid black silhouettes, a tall thin figure and a smaller figure with long hair, holding hands on top of a dark swirled hill. A line of black script lettering reading 'We can live like Jack and Sally if we want' sits to the left of the figures. The ink is solid black with soft shading on the hill and a plain skin background, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

The road up Varrow Pass wound around the Coil three times before it reached the top, and by the third turn Ilse had stopped counting the stones she passed. Tobias walked ahead with the lantern, tall and narrow as a gatepost, and every so often he looked back to see whether she still followed.

At the crest the wind was loud enough to drown a church bell. Nothing grew on the summit but a flat black hump of rock that curled down toward the valley like a fern unrolling, and the village below had not lit a candle in a week. Ilse set her bundle on the stone. "The old women say the Coil takes anyone who stands at its centre," she said. "Then we'll stand there and see what it wants."

Tobias laughed, which he rarely did, and took her hand. Her fingers were cold and her hair blew across her face, so she could not see his expression when he said, "We can live up here like the ones in the stories, if we want. Nobody in Varrow needs to approve of us." The wind dropped as he spoke. Far below, a single lamp went out in the valley, and then another.

They came down the far side before dawn, and no one in Varrow ever learned where the lantern had gone. The village still tells the tale on winter nights, though it says only that two walkers climbed the pass and stood at the centre of the hill, and that the hill has been quiet since.
