Dandelion and birds quote on foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A dandelion on the left dissolves into scattered seeds that turn into a line of bird silhouettes running across the foot, with a single small purple bird among them. The words She believed she could so she did run through the middle in a flowing black script. Black ink dominates with a small area of purple, and the design is set against pale skin with a green background and a wooden cabinet in the top corner.

Brother Anselm kept the herb beds at Sallow Abbey, and every April he let the dandelions on the south wall go to seed. The abbot grumbled about the mess in the cloister, but Anselm said a thing that meant to fly should get its chance before anyone cut it down. The novices thought him soft until they watched him stand on a stool at dusk, blowing gently across a clock until the seeds lifted like smoke.

Wynn arrived that spring from the salt marsh towns, thin and coughing, with a ledger of everything she had lost. She believed in little she could not weigh or count. On her first morning she found Anselm on the wall and asked how a seed knew where to land. He blew once more and watched the drift go over the reed beds toward the river. 'It doesn't know,' he said. 'It only goes, and the going is most of the work.'
She did not like that answer and turned it over all summer. She learned the herb tables, the psalter and the hours. When autumn rains came and a carter brought word that her aunt had died and the farm was hers to sell, she packed her ledger and walked to the gate. Anselm was waiting with a dry clock in his palm. He pressed it between the pages of her psalter without a word.
Years later a parcel came to the abbey with no return address. Inside was a bundle of pressed feathers and a note in a cramped hand saying the seeds had carried further than she expected, and that she had followed them. Anselm read it twice on the wall, then looked up at the drifting clocks and laughed.
