Jack Skellington and Sally on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon characters Jack Skellington and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Jack's skull head floating above a pale, stitched body in jeans and Sally embracing him. The shading is soft and painterly, with blended highlights on the clothing and skin tones. Blues, reds and pale greens dominate, and the design fills the upper arm against a dark sleeveless top.

Dear Bea,

The children's ward has a new pair of residents, and I'm writing because you'll never believe the handover I got at ten past seven. Ruth from the Tuesday knitting group left a donation on the nurses' station: a lanky rag man with stitched seams and blue jeans, a paper-mache skull on a broom handle, and a pale girl with a fringe of red wool who wraps herself round his middle like she means it. Ruth said they were for frightened kids to hold during bloods. Dan on the porters' desk took one look and named them Mr Grimsby and Ottilie, and that was that.

By two in the morning Ottilie had slid off the day-room chair three times and Mr Grimsby's head had rolled under the sluice. Dan fished it out with a mop handle, grumbling that he hadn't signed up for this. The only one who didn't mind was Kofi in bay four, eight years old and very sure of himself. He insisted they were in love and had to sit together or the sums wouldn't work. So we sat them together, and he went home on Thursday with a bandage and a grin, and I thought that was the end of it.

This morning I found them on the bench outside the lift lobby. Someone, I suspect Dan, had threaded the skull back onto the rag shoulders with fishing line and set Ottilie's arm firmly across his ribs. Nobody had asked for it and nobody would own up. I stood there with my cold tea and couldn't bring myself to separate them before the day staff came on. They looked, if I'm honest, more settled than most of us.

Love, Pearl
