Nightmare Before Christmas characters on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a skeletal figure in a pinstripe suit beside a pale rag-doll character with red hair, under a yellow spiral moon. Below them, smaller figures in pink and purple clothing, one wearing a wide-brimmed hat, look up with wide eyes. The shading is smooth and cartoon-like, with bold outlines, bright blues, purples and yellows, and the figures fill the arm in a tightly packed composition.

Sit nearer, all of you, because the wood beyond Ashcombe Lane does not care for loud talk after dark. Every hollow month the moon rises over the beeches the colour of mustard, with a spiral wound round its face like the back of a snail. That is how the folk of Thornmere knew the Bone Gentleman was out walking.

He was a long, loose fellow, ribs showing through a black coat striped white like ledger paper, with a grin that ran almost round to the back of his skull. Having frightened every scarecrow and gate hinge for forty miles, he grew bored, and went looking for something new to startle. What he found was a rag girl stitched from grey cloth, with red wool hair and a face sewn permanently surprised. She lived in the dye-works chimney because it was warm, and she kept a pot of blackberry jam on the sill for the hedgehogs.
The trouble started with the children. Three of them, Mabel Tuckett in her pink pinafore, her brother in purple breeches, and little Tam with a hat too big for him, crept into the wood every night to watch the Gentleman dance with his own shadow. The rag girl heard them giggling from the chimney and came down the lane with her needle in her teeth. She did not shout. She simply sat on the stile until the Gentleman stopped capering, and then she held out her hand and asked him to walk the children home.
The next morning, each child woke in bed with a sugared apple on the pillow and a red wool thread tied round one finger. The moon was only a pale coin by then, and the lane was quiet. Mabel swore she saw a long white shape tip its hat at the window before the frost came down.
