Zombified Snow White eating a brain
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A cartoon princess with a black and blue hairstyle and a red bow is shown as a zombie, with green-tinged skin, bloodied red mouth and wounds, and a brain held in one hand. The design uses bold black outlines, flat fills and saturated colour in blue, green, red and yellow. A partial yellow cartoon figure appears at the lower right edge of the frame.

Entry 41, the cottage at the edge of Briarwood. Grumpy has nailed the shutters shut again, and nobody has the heart to tell him the bolts were on the inside all along. Snow came back from the clearing on Tuesday with her good blue dress torn at the shoulder and her red bow still tied crooked, humming the way she did when we were small enough to be carried up to bed. She has not hummed since.

The trouble started with the apples. The old queen's orchard went to briar years ago, but windfalls still rolled down the hill to our door, and Snow picked them up as though nothing had changed. Happy noticed first that she had stopped sleeping. Then the birds stopped coming to the sill. The little yellow finch that perched by the kettle for seven winters flew off on Monday and did not come back, and Snow only watched the window with her head on one side.
Last night I found her in the scullery with the lamp turned down, a grey thing cradled in her two hands, pink and folded like a sleeping cat's cushion. She looked up at me with one eye that was not quite right and said, very politely, 'Dopey, would you like to help me finish my supper?' I said no, thank you, I had already eaten. She laughed. It was the old laugh, and that was the worst of it.
This morning the lamp was still lit and the scullery door stood open. Seven plates were laid on the table, one more than there are of us, and the bow lay on the flagstones beside them, untied. Somebody has to write to the prince. I am the one who can spell.
