Jackalope tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A jackalope, a rabbit with large branched antlers, sits in profile with its head turned towards the viewer and a faint orange halo behind it. The bold outlines and faceted shading in teal, purple, brown and orange give the animal a stylised, painterly look. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred background of metal and dark fabric.

Dear Mags,

You will not believe what the caterers found under the marquee on Saturday, two hours before Ruth walked up the lane. It was sitting in the hay bales by the gate, watching the bunting as if it had paid for a ticket. Antlers the length of my forearm, a coat the colour of wet bark, and eyes that looked annoyed with all of us. Dennis from the farm swore blind it wasn't his, then went very quiet and said his father used to talk about one that lived up on the ridge above the quarry.
Nobody could catch it. Ruth's brother tried with a cardboard box and a bottle of Prosecco, which I think was the wrong strategy. In the end Gran's old friend Pearl sat down on an upturned crate in her navy hat, opened a tin of sardines, and simply waited. Forty minutes, Mags. The animal came down off the bales, took one sardine, and then, to everyone's astonishment, turned its head and looked straight at the bride as though it approved.
Ruth cried. Of course she did. Then she laughed and said her mother always swore the creature was a sign that a marriage would last if you didn't try to pin it down. I thought it was nonsense until it wandered off through the orchard, antlers catching the last of the sun, and I realised nobody had thought to take a photo.
Write back and tell me if you believe any of it.
Love, Hen
