Brown rabbit and cherry blossom in a gold frame
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A brown rabbit with a large purple eye peeks out from an oval gold ornamental frame with a teal inner panel. Pink cherry blossoms and a dark branch cross the lower right of the design, with a small floral motif at the top of the frame. The rabbit is shaded with soft gradients and bold outlines, and the photo is taken straight on against a plain background on the forearm.

The frame had hung in the back corridor of the Pellucid Hall for longer than anyone could remember, and Mrs Odile Bramwell had never once looked at it properly until the night the caretaker came to her with a ladder and a face like wet paper. Behind the gilt and the teal velvet, pinned to the lath with a single brass tack, was a folded square of card. On it, in a hand that sloped like a hurrying stag, someone had written her mother's name and the words *she will come out when the blossom does*.

Odile did not believe in such things. She had spent thirty years in the trade of making things appear, and she knew the difference between a trick and a truth only by the price of the ticket. Still, she sent the caretaker for the last of the plum blossom they kept pressed in the prop room, and she carried it back to the corridor in a jam jar, wedged it into the frame's lower corner, and sat on the cold floor with her back to the wall until the lamps went out.
She woke to a small wet nose against her wrist. The rabbit that sat in the frame was no longer painted. It was brown as cinder-tea and perfectly real, and its purple eye, which had always looked so knowing, now looked merely tired. It hopped down onto the floorboards, sniffed the blossom, and then turned, once, to see whether she would follow.
She did. The corridor kept going long after it should have ended, and somewhere at the far end a band was playing a waltz that had been retired in 1952.
