Stag with antlers and leaves on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A stag's head with branching antlers, surrounded by leaves, is drawn in black linework with fine stippled shading on the face and neck. A dark geometric diamond pattern sits behind the antlers, and soft red and blue watercolour washes spread around the design. The tattoo is photographed straight on, filling the frame of a thigh.

The stag came down to the village the spring the river froze twice. Nobody in Ashcombe Lane had seen one that close before, and old Mrs Tully, who kept the allotment behind the chapel, said it was come for the sorrel she had been growing against the wall for nine years. She said it the way she said most things, without looking up from her beans.

Her grandson Dale, who was eleven and had opinions, went out with a broom to shoo it off. The stag only lowered its head and let him stand there. Its antlers were wide as a garden gate and every tine was furred with new leaves, hawthorn and ivy and something small and bitter that Dale could not name. He stood so long that his broom started to feel foolish in his hands, and in the end he gave it up and sat on the upturned bucket beside the water butt.

The stag ate the sorrel, every stalk, and then it ate the rhubarb too. When the light went copper over the chapel roof it turned and walked back up the lane, and the leaves on its horns shook with each step like a crowd applauding quietly. Mrs Tully swept the bean trellis without comment. Next morning the wall was bare, but at the foot of the water butt there lay a single green leaf, sharp-edged and fresh, and Dale kept it pressed in his atlas for the rest of his life.
