Stag, golden snitch and 9 3/4 on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two views of the same forearm tattoo sit side by side. A stag's head with branching antlers dominates the design, with a golden snitch with wings above it, a Deathly Hallows triangle and circle to the left, and the numerals 9 3/4 below the stag's neck. The stag is outlined in black with stippled shading, while the background is filled with soft teal and purple watercolour splashes.

Old Tamsin Hale had kept the gate at Brackwood crossing for forty years, and she knew the stag by its breath before she saw it. It came out of the trees each evening when the lamps were lit, its antlers combed with frost, and stood at the far rail as if waiting for a train that had stopped running before the war.

The mill boy, Ewan, came to her the autumn the golden ball first appeared. It had wings no bigger than a wren's and it hummed above the hedge like a struck spoon. Everyone wanted it. Ewan caught it in his cap, but it struggled so hard he let it go, and it rose shining over the heath while the stag turned its head to watch.
Tamsin walked out to the stone ring on the hill, the one with a triangle cut into its middle and a circle set inside the triangle. She laid three hazel sticks on the grass the way her mother had taught her. "Ask it nothing," she said. "Give it the road."
Ewan found the platform of nine and three-quarters later that winter, a sliver of stone between two posts at the halt where the rails had long been lifted. When he stepped onto it the stag stood in the gap, and the ball came down into his palm, quiet as an egg. He never told anyone what he had wished. The stag walked on into the forest, and the gate stayed open.
