Jane Austen silhouette and script on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a woman in profile sits on the inner forearm, with the name Jane Austen written in fine cursive script below it. The silhouette is filled with black ink and shows fine texture, while the script is thin and delicate. Behind the arm, stacked hardback spines of Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen appear in pink, blue and gold.

The bookshop on Cable Street pulls its shutter down at nine, but you stay behind to shelve the damp boxes from a house clearance in Hove. Whoever packed them was in a hurry. Under a water-stained copy of Persuasion you find a pair of matching spines, one pink and one gold, their boards gone soft as bread, and a pencil note on the flyleaf that reads: Keep the profile, lose the rest.

The radiator knocks in the back office like someone wanting in. Outside, buses hiss through the wet road and a woman in a green raincoat walks the same dog under the same lamp twice. You turn the pages of Sense and Sensibility looking for the joke, and halfway through a cut-paper silhouette slips out onto the desk: a face turned left, hair pinned high, the edge so sharp it could open a thumb. Behind it is a list of addresses in the same neat hand, every line struck through except one, a flat above a launderette off the Mile End Road.
The sensible thing is to lock up and go home. Instead you pull your collar up, switch off the lamp, and walk the eleven minutes there, counting lit windows and reading the names beside the bells. The launderette sign has lost its second E, and the dryers turn behind the glass like slow planets. The buzzer for the top flat has a card with one word on it in faded cursive: Austen.
You press it anyway. A voice crackles back, dry and amused. "You've come for the rest, then." The silhouette stays folded in your coat pocket, warm as a hand.
