Small cat silhouette on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a cat, shown in a mid-leap or stretching pose with its tail curled down, sits on the inner wrist. The tattoo uses flat black ink with no visible shading or fine linework, and the shape is simple and bold. The image is in full colour overall, with the black ink contrasting against pale skin, a grey knitted sleeve and green plants with white flowers in the background.

Nobody in Sheffield believes me about the gap between the chapel roof and Ellerby Street, so I've stopped telling them. I was on the bike that night, the last drop of a long shift, when the lamps went out along the whole hill and the city sank into that thick orange hush. Gaffer came off the chapel wall in one clean stretch, tail trailing behind him like a dropped rope, and crossed three metres of wet slate without a single tile shifting.

My brother Dev had been locked out since nine. His keys had gone down a grate outside the Crown, and he was sitting on the kerb with a cold chip in each hand, swearing softly at the dark. I called the cat's name up at the rooftops because it was the only thing I could think to do. Gaffer answered with a thin complaint from the gutter, then nothing. I had given up and was lighting a cigarette I didn't want when a shape came down over the bins, legs out, landing as soft as a dropped glove on the sill of Dev's kitchen window.
What happened next I still can't fully explain. Something bright came spinning out of the dark and rang on the pavement beside Dev's trainer. It was the spare key, the one he swore he'd lost in 2019. Dev picked it up, didn't say thanks, just looked up at the roofline for a long moment. On the sill, Gaffer sat with his tail curled down around his feet, watching the two of us as though we were the ones who needed rescuing.
