Fine line world map tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a fine line tattoo of a world map with continent outlines drawn in thin black linework on the inner wrist and forearm. The lines are delicate and even, with no shading or solid fills, and the design sits on pale skin. Beaded bracelets in turquoise, cream and black and a thin silver bracelet sit over the wrist, and the dark fabric of a sleeve frames the lower part of the image.

Mireille had been tracing the coastline of Africa with a stylus for three hours when the lamp in the archive began to flicker, and she knew the grid was failing again. Salt had crept into the cable runs beneath the old Greenwich vaults. The surveyor drones had mapped the drowned cities twice already, and each time the sea had shifted the lines a little further inland.

Her uncle Tobias had kept the last paper atlas in a flat above the chandlery at Ramsgate. He used to say the continents were only outlines people agreed on, like a promise between strangers who would never meet. After he died she found the atlas in a tin box, and over one long winter she copied its pages in fine black line, working by daylight because ink needed no power and the sea could not flood it.
The council came on a Tuesday, men in grey coats carrying tablets that showed the new shorelines. They wanted the old borders struck from the civic record, every national boundary replaced with the water's latest guess. Mireille said nothing. She unrolled the drawing across the table, the lines of Europe and the Americas crisp and even, and waited for them to find a mistake.
They searched for a long time. Then the eldest of them, who had been born in the shadow of the Thames barrier, put one finger on the Cape and said, that is where the water has already taken everything. Mireille folded the paper along its creases. "Then draw it again," she said, "and I will show you where the old coast used to meet the new one."
