Blue botanical bouquet on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of pansies, hydrangea-like blooms and small sprigs of flowers sits on the inner forearm, with leaves trailing down toward the wrist. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading built up through cross-hatching and stippling in a single shade of blue ink. The composition is angled across the arm against a plain pale background, with the design fading slightly toward the lower edge.

The last bill went up on a Tuesday, and my father still insisted on the pansies. He had painted them himself on the side of the Pemberton wagon forty years back, a bouquet the size of a cartwheel, and when the damp got into the boards he traced the blooms again with a sable brush and a pot of Prussian blue. Nobody had asked him to. The council had already sold the field to a man who wanted it for houses.

I held the ladder while he worked. Mrs Oakes from the candy stall brought tea in a dented urn and said the elephant had gone off her feed, which meant what it always meant, that nobody had paid for hay since March. Dad hummed. His hand shook on the hydrangea clusters, so he did them in small dabs, stippling the way his own mother had taught him with a cocktail stick, until the petals looked rained on.

A boy from the estate came to the fence with a bottle of cider and asked what the flowers were for. Dad said they were for whoever came next. I thought he was being sad about it. Then he pressed one of the spare stencils into my palm, still tacky, and told me to keep it dry.

That night the wagon went onto the lorry with its blue flowers facing the planks. I carried the stencil in my coat pocket all the way to Boston, and I still have it, the blue gone soft at the edges like a bloom that has been out in the rain.
