Watercolour compass on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pocket compass with a compass rose sits at the centre of the design, outlined in fine dark lines with soft shading on the case. Loose watercolour splashes in blue, orange, pink and purple spill outward from the compass and trail down across the forearm. The tattoo is photographed against a plain white background, with the hand visible at the top right.

Her grandfather had painted for the lifeboat auction every winter, the one thing he ever did with his hands that wasn't gutting herring. He kept his brushes in a jam jar and mixed what was left in the tins: cobalt, a rust orange, the rose madder he saved for sunsets he never saw from the harbour wall. The compass had come to her after his funeral, with a bead of wet colour still bleeding across the lid. The needle wavered, then settled, its point aimed at the rose of the card as if it had been waiting for her. Dilys called the bearing to Tom Vosper at the wheel, and he looked at her hand, then at the glass, and nodded without a word. They came about slowly. Within the hour the fog thinned to a grey rim over the headland, and the lights of the harbour swam up through it like something spilled.

Back ashore that night she wiped the brass with a rag and found a streak of orange still caught in the glass, where spray had run it down. She left it there.
