Black and grey realistic skull tattoo with ink splatter and mechanical detail on a forearm, photographed on a wooden surface.

Realistic skull tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large, shaded human skull fills the centre of the forearm, with its eye sockets and teeth picked out in dark tones. Soft grey shading gives the bone a three-dimensional look, while black ink splatter spreads around the skull and behind the lower jaw. Metal ring and cable-like shapes sit beneath the skull, and the photo shows the wrist at the bottom edge against a wooden surface.

Dear Tobias, the hinge on the chapel door has finally gone, so I am writing this by the last of the candle on the stairs, sitting where the roof used to be. You will not believe what Mrs Pargeter's boys dug out of the cellar under the east tower. It is a skull, and not a plain one. Someone has fitted it with brass rings at the jaw and a coil of cable through the brow, as though a clockmaker and a surgeon had quarrelled over it and both won.

The stonemason says it is older than the castle. I say it is younger, because the brass is still bright under the verdigris and the teeth have been painted black with something that smells of linseed. Father would have wanted it sent to the museum in Shrewsbury, but the carrier has not come up the lane since March, and the river has taken the bridge.

Last night I tried to scrub the jaw with turpentine, and the ink that had dried on the sill from your old pen lifted off the paper and flew across the bone in a great black fan. I laughed until I cried. It looked so exactly like the splashes you used to make on my sketches. I have left it as it fell. Perhaps that was always its face.

I will keep the skull on the windowsill facing the valley, where the evening light comes through its eye sockets. Come when the roads dry. Bring your rings and your bad temper. I think the thing wants mending, and I think we are the only two people left who would know how.
