The big top in Harrowgate finally came down on Sunday, and I have been sitting on the caravan step since with the last roll of film in my lap. You will laugh, but Pinchbeck still wanted his photograph. He came to the ring-master's tent at dusk in that green wig the wardrobe mistress dyed with cheap hair colour, and he stood under the one working bulb with the camera raised to his eye as if it were the last thing he owned. "Smile!" he kept saying, and then he would show me his teeth, painted red at the edges, and laugh until the lamp swayed.

I took eleven frames. Eleven, because the shutter on that old body sticks on the twelfth, and I have learned to wind it twice. He wanted the final matinee's ticket stubs in the picture, the empty benches, and a boy from the town who had come to shake his hand and found nobody left to shake.

I developed them in the bathroom of the Grand. Ten are blurred, just his grin and the pale smudge of his glove. The eleventh is sharp. It shows a man who has pointed a camera at strangers for thirty years and never once been in the frame, and for one second he looks almost pleased to be caught. I am posting it to you, not the bailiffs.
