A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The rain has been coming sideways across the Saturday market since eight, and by eleven your cardboard sign has gone soft at the corners. HERALDRY WHILE YOU WAIT, it says, £2 A CREST. Nobody has waited. Mrs Pryce on the next pitch sells phone cases under a gazebo that sags with water like a cupped hand, and she has watched you sell nothing all morning with the patience of a woman who has seen every kind of fool.

A girl in a yellow mac stops at your table just as the gutter overhead begins to gargle. She reads the board twice. 'Can a crest say something other than just married?' she asks. You tell her the shield is the shield and the banner is what people come for. She frowns at the checked bands, the scrolling leaves climbing the edge of the sheet, the grey ink that looks like pencil under the drizzle. 'It looks like something a bishop would have on his cufflinks,' she says. 'Give me three.'
You peel the backing from the first one and press it to the inside of your wrist to show her how it works, the way the man who taught you did, with a wet thumb and a slow count of thirty. The sheet slides. The shield comes away crooked, the banner beneath it upside down, so that the words run the wrong way like a sentence read in a mirror. She laughs, a proper laugh, and says it is the most honest family crest she has ever seen.
She pays you in coins she has to dig out of the mac pocket, and you wrap the three sheets in a paper bag that is already dissolving. When she has gone, you tip the leftover packets into the crate and find the crooked one still stuck to your wrist. You leave it there until the rain washes it off, the banner going grey, then pale, then gone down the drain.
