A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit yourself down on that coil of rope and mind the cat, she's not as soft as she looks. You want the story of the Batman sheet? Everyone on the Severn knows it now, though they've got the facts wrong. Young Danny Oakes bought it off a market stall in Tewkesbury for sixpence, a card of flash tattoos in gold and silver, bats of every size and a chain of stars that ran the length of the card. His mam said they'd wash off in a week, and he said he didn't care, because a week was a lifetime to a boy of nine.

He wore the big bat on his wrist the first day, and the chain of stars up his arm like a wireless cable, and by the Tuesday he'd run out of skin to spare. So he took the strip of silver stars and the leftover bats down to the lock at Upton and pressed them onto the great black gates, one bat per paddle, a row of stars climbing the timber like a ladder. Mrs Hale, who kept that lock for forty years, came out with her teapot, saw what he'd done, and said nothing, which from her was as good as a signed permit.
It rained hard on the Thursday. Danny went down at dawn expecting bare timber, and the bats had gone to nothing, but the outlined stars had bitten into the grain and stayed, pale as frost. They're still there. When the lock fills and the water pours over them, you can see them shining under the surface like a fallen sky.
That's why the river men never call that lock by its proper name. To us it's the Star Gate, and if you're down at Upton with a bit of luck, you'll see the boy's stars wink at you before the water settles.
