Kaiju monster in a circle on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A green kaiju monster with a wide open, toothed mouth and a yellow eye rises above rocks and waves, all contained within a black circle. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills give it a classic traditional look, with dark green scales, red-shaded ridges and orange spikes down the back. The circular frame and the wave and rock details at the base keep the composition balanced.

The boat is already listing when you reach the slipway, and Mrs Ferrier is shouting your name the way she used to at the school gates, as if the sea might be shamed into giving it back. Take the lantern. Leave the nets. Nobody on Skarra has gone out after a catch with the moon sitting that low and that white, and tonight it has a crack down its face like a dropped plate.

The thing comes up past the black stack at the harbour mouth, slower than you would believe anything that size could move. Water sheets off its back in ropes. Its scales take the lantern light one by one, dark green, and then a line of orange spines flares as the swell lifts them. It turns its head towards the village lights and opens a mouth lined with teeth the length of oars, and the sound it makes is not a roar but a long, patient clearing of the throat.
You have a gutting knife and no sense at all. Still, you see what your grandfather never told you to look for: a loop of old orange float-rope knotted round its neck, grown into the skin, the same rope the Ferriers strung across the bay the year the Morag went down. The creature has not come to eat anyone. It has come to the one place where somebody might cut it loose. So you wade out to your waist, and the water is warmer than it has any right to be, and you saw until the rope parts.
By dawn the moon has mended itself over the headland. On the rocks below the harbour wall lies a single orange spine, long as a man's forearm, left at the tideline. Nobody on Skarra will say where it came from. Your grandfather kept one just like it on the mantel, and when the weather turns, he swears it hums.
