Fish tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large fish runs diagonally along the forearm, with a tail at the upper left and its head at the lower right. The blue-grey scales are shaded with lighter highlights, while the body and head are tan and pink with teal spots, and small teal bubbles surround it. Bold black outlines define the shapes against the skin, and the composition fills the forearm.

The trout arrived at the mill on the morning of the wedding, lying on the step as if it had walked there. Old Morag Dunn, who had cooked for three weddings and two funerals on that road, picked it up by the gills and declared it too fine to eat. She carried it down to the millrace and set it in the cold water beneath the wheel, and said it would keep until the dancing was over.

The bride, Isla, wore her mother's blue shawl and laughed at the old woman's fuss. By the time the fiddler struck up the third reel, the trout had risen to the pool's edge, its scales grey as slate and its flanks freckled with teal, and it was blowing small bubbles that climbed past the wheel like a string of pearls. Tam saw it first. He said nothing, but he took Isla's hand and they walked down to the race together.
The fish turned slowly, showing its pink and gold underside, then lifted its head towards the bride as though it had been waiting for her. Morag said afterwards that it was a bargain: the river would take a gift at a wedding, and in return it would keep the house's luck. Isla did not believe a word of it, but she took a heel of bread from her pocket and crumbled it onto the water.
The trout ate every crumb, then slid back into the dark under the wheel. Years later, when the mill had a new roof and Isla had three children and a sour temper in winter, the family still left a crust on the step each spring morning. Nobody could say who had started it. They remembered only the fish that came for it.
