Kanji symbol with torn skin on chest
Japanese · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A black kanji character sits inside a pale blue and white circle with a bold black outline. Red and orange shading around the edge creates the look of skin peeling back to reveal the emblem beneath. The tattoo is centred on the upper chest, with the lower face and shoulders softly out of focus around it.

Margaret Ashdown had been pulling bindweed from the rockery for three weeks before the spade struck something that rang like a bell. She knelt in the wet clay and brushed it clean with her thumb: a disc of pale grey stone, no wider than a saucer, with a black character cut so deep that rain had never filled it. The gardener who had worked this plot before her, a man named Teodor Vance who had kept the Hallam estate's glasshouses until the war, had left no notes. Only rows of hellebores and a ledger full of weights and dates.

She carried the stone to the potting shed and set it on the bench beside the kettle. Under the lamp the carved mark looked like a figure with its heart open, a shape that could mean wake up or see clearly, depending on who was reading it. She had a Japanese dictionary from a jumble sale and spent an evening with it, her tea going cold, until she decided the word meant something close to understanding that arrives all at once, like frost settling on a window.
The next morning she did not dig. She sat on the low wall with her flask and watched the light come over the yew, and for the first time in years she noticed the bees were already at the comfrey before the sun reached the path. Teodor's ledger had one line on its last page, written in pencil: Moved the stone to the north bed so the frost finds it first.
She went and found the north bed. The frost had left a ring of white on the soil, and in the middle of it, where the stone sat, the ground was dry as paper.
