Hands forming a heart on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two stylised cartoon hands, with gloved-style fingers and thumbs, meeting to form an open heart shape in the centre. It is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading or fill, so the skin shows through the outlines. The photo is taken from behind, with the tattoo on the upper shoulder and the white vest top and tanned skin filling most of the frame.

By the third week out of Santos the stevedores had stopped asking you for the rabbit and started asking for the heart. You didn't mind. The bulkhead lamp in the mess was the only light on the ship that threw a clean shadow, and you had learned to bring two gloved hands together under it, thumbs hooked, knuckles bent just so, until the far wall held a heart the size of a dinner plate.

Ruddock, the chief engineer, called it soppy. He still came to watch, though, and so did the ship's cat, who would sit square beneath the shape with one paw lifted as if she meant to catch it. Forty days on a box of steel will make any man sentimental about a thing he can name, and by the twentieth evening the whole mess had gone quiet when the lamp came on.

The turn came with the post. The agent in Montevideo had sent a sealed envelope for the second mate, and the second mate, who could not draw to save his life, asked you to copy the sketch on the flap so he could show his daughter which way the fingers went. You traced it in grease pencil on the back of a manifest, and only then saw that you had been making the gesture wrong all along. The thumbs went under, not over. Nobody had said a word.

You did not tell anyone. You switched the lamp off, lit it again, and worked the hands the new way until the heart came out lopsided and then true. Ruddock was the last to leave. He stopped in the doorway, looked at the wall for a long moment, and said the thing was still soppy, but it was the right soppy now.
