Keep going script on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line script tattoo reading keep going, set diagonally across the upper chest close to the collarbone. The linework is thin and even, with a slight variation in weight that suggests a handwritten style. The image is black and grey, with soft natural shading on the skin around the lettering.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit down, the lot of you, the tide won't turn for an hour and I've never once told a story on my feet. Right. There was a crab boat called the Marigold that worked out of Porthkerry, and her skipper was a woman named Nell Sayers with a temper like a gull over chips.

The winter the herring went off, Nell lost her engine off the Skerries in a squall. Four miles of grey water lay between her and the harbour wall, with a pair of oars, a bailing tin, and a mate who'd gone quiet in the way that frightens a body more than shouting. The old salts will tell you she sat down in the bilge and wept. She didn't. She looked up at the transom, where her father had painted two words in white years back, in the looping hand he used for letters home, and she said them out loud, the way you'd tell a dog to heel.
Keep going, she said. And she did, through the dark and the spray, and when the lifeboat found them at dawn she had her mate's hand in one of hers and an oar in the other, still pulling. The Marigold came home on the next tide with her name still legible, and Nell had the words repainted the very next week in a finer brush than before, because the salt had eaten at the edges.
Mind you, the words only need to be clear enough to read in the dark. Now who's fetching me a pint, because my throat's drier than the Skerries in August.
