Keep going script on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of the words keep going in a flowing, handwritten script sits on the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The linework is thin and solid black, with the lettering slanting across the skin. The image is black and white and framed tightly on the chest and shoulder, leaving the subject's face out of view.

Dear Ilse, the lorry from Kaunas is still stuck at the barrier and the man in the glass booth has stopped looking up at me, which I take as a good sign. Your postcard is propped against the tea urn. The one with the heron on it, which you swore was a gull until I pointed out the legs.

Your father would have laughed at the queue. Forty-one trucks this morning, two of them carrying nothing but bees in white crates, humming like a wireless that won't tune. The driver of the bee lorry sat on my step with his boots off and told me the crossing used to take a day and now takes three, and that his grandmother walked it once with a goat and a sack of wheat. I told him the goat had the better of it.

Here is the thing I meant to write. On Tuesday the girl from the customs office came in with her hands cupped around something, and it was a moth with one wing torn half away. She asked whether it would fly again. I said I didn't know, but I had seen worse things mend. Then I wrote on a paper napkin, in my bad hand, the words I used to write on your lunch box: keep going. She folded it into her pocket as if it were a ticket.

I'm not writing to ask you to come home. I'm writing because the barrier has just gone up and I have to fill the urn before the first trucks reach the step. Keep going, love. The heron still has its legs to prove.
