Key and heart padlock with roses
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
Two line drawing designs sit side by side on a pale pink background. The left design shows an ornate key crossed with a chain over a rose and leaves, and the right shows a heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole, a rose and chain. Both use clean, even black linework with decorative scrolls and no shading or colour fill.

You are the third locksmith's apprentice sent up the hill to Thornmere Castle in a single winter, and the steward tells you the last two went home with their hands shaking. "The queen wants a lock that cannot be opened," he says, "and a key that cannot be lost." You laugh, because nothing in the kingdom of Varenna is unopenable, and he does not laugh back.

You work for nine nights at the forge below the rose walls. The heart comes first, hammered thin from silver the colour of rain, its face crowded with scrolls like frost on a window. You cut the keyhole last, so small a barley grain could fill it. The key you make to match, long as your forearm, with a bow worked into curls and a bit filed so fine it sings when you flick it. Chain links from the same wire run around both, and at dawn on the tenth day you carry them up to the rose garden.
The queen is not there. Only her gardener, an old woman with soil under every nail, who takes the lock, turns it over, and asks why you cut the keyhole at the centre of the heart rather than the side. You say a lock is meant to be opened from the front. She says, "Then you have built a lock for someone who wants to be found." She hangs the key over a rose bush, loops the chain through the leaves, and walks away without another word.
You leave the lock where she put it. By evening the roses have closed around it, and the key is gone. The steward says the queen was pleased and the castle wants no more locksmiths. Some nights you still hear, from somewhere beyond the wall, a small bright ring, the sound a key makes when it turns for the first time.
