The cat came with the ruin, or so the estate agent said when he handed me the iron key to Hollin Keep. Nobody had lived in the north range since the fire of 1861, and the courtyard had gone to brambles and wild plum. I assumed she was a mouser left behind by the last tenants. She assumed the gatehouse was hers, and she was not in the mood for discussion.

She spent her days on the broken sill of the chapel window, sitting upright with her tail curled round her feet. Her face was always turned to the right, towards the valley road where the old carriage track ran down between the hawthorns. Whatever she expected to come up it, she never told me. In March the plum buds on the wall swelled and split, and she batted at the new leaves with one paw as though checking they were real.

I started leaving a saucer of milk on the sill, and she started allowing me to watch her drink it. The council sent a man in a yellow jacket to measure the walls for fencing. He stood in the courtyard, looked at the cat, and asked how long I intended to keep a ruin. I said I would stop when she did. He wrote something down and pushed a letter under the gatehouse door.

The letter gave me until the end of the month. That morning the cat came down from the chapel, walked past her saucer, and sat by the gate with her eyes fixed on the road. The plum was in full white blossom. I stood beside her, and she looked up at me once, the way you check a clock, then turned back to the hawthorns, satisfied that I would have to do until whoever she was waiting for arrived.
