Rose and skull tattoos on the hands
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A man in a navy pinstripe suit and blue shirt adjusts his tie, with a gold wristwatch on his right wrist. The back of his right hand carries a shaded black and grey rose with bold outlines, and his left hand shows a skull tattoo with heavy linework. The face is cropped out and the soft studio lighting keeps the focus on the hands and ink.

Mr Aldous Frane had never let a knot go crooked in forty years of cutting for the Mayfair houses, and he was not going to start on the morning the bank rang. Cosmo Vane stood before the mirror in the back room off Lisle Street, fingers working the silk, while Ada Penhallow hung the navy pinstripe on the rail and pretended not to listen. The shop smelled of steam and tailor's chalk.

"Four inches under the collar," Frane said. "Always let the thick end run long. A man who rushes his knot is a man who owes money." Vane laughed, but the hand with the old skull inked across its knuckles, a souvenir from a Wapping stint nobody mentioned, went still on the fabric. Ada noticed the stillness before she noticed the watch, a heavy gold piece that had been Frane's father's and ran ten minutes fast.
Frane had once told Vane that a rose shaded in grey would always outlast the bright colours, because the grey held its shape on a working hand. Vane had taken the remark to mean something else entirely. He pulled the knot tight, and the tie settled exactly where Frane would have wanted it, a dark line down a blue shirt.
"Ring the bank back," Frane said, smoothing a lapel with the flat of his palm. "Tell them the suit is ready." Ada watched Vane fasten the jacket with three quick snaps, the way a man shuts a door he means to walk back through. Outside, a bus groaned past the window, and somewhere across the city a cash box was being counted by someone who did not yet know it was short.
