Kokopelli figure with sun and flower
Traditional · Colour · Photo
A black Kokopelli figure with a feathered headdress and a hump-backed body dominates the design, set in front of a large orange-red sun with radiating rays. A stylised geometric flower in yellow, brown, red and green sits at the lower left, with dotted red accents and bold black outlines. The flat colour fills and heavy outlines are set against a close crop of skin.

Dear Ada,

The 6.40 came in dusty again this morning, and the man who stepped off it was carrying nothing but a flute and a sack that rattled like dry beans. He asked me for the water tap before he asked for a ticket, which I thought was honest of him. I told him the tap was for engines, and he laughed and said the engines and he had the same thirst. Mr Pruett at the goods shed says he is a trickster, that he took a farmer's daughter's shawl last summer and returned it full of sunflower seed. I do not believe the half of it, but I did watch him sit on the platform bench at noon with the sun behind him like a coin on fire, playing that thin tune until the signal lamps flickered.
Last Thursday the wind turned round and the dust stopped. Nobody would say it was him. Mrs Halloran's marrow patch, which had been a fright for three years, came up green along the cutting, and the children ran about shouting that a piper had made the rain come walking. I know that is nonsense. Still, I took the painted flower he left on the ticket counter, a thing with rays like a wheel, and pinned it above the telegraph key where the lamplight falls.
He boards the westbound tomorrow with a single ticket to nowhere in particular. I asked him where he was headed. He only pointed at the sun, sitting low and red over the water tower, and said, you watch that, it always goes somewhere useful.
Your loving brother, Tom
