You asked whether I had given up on the flat with the damp patch shaped like Portugal. I haven't. Yesterday I dug out the tin of cadmium red you left behind and painted a stripe down the kitchen wall, then went over the cupboard door in your wobbly capitals: LA VIE BOHEME. Somebody in this building needs to say it out loud, and the lads on the bins clearly weren't going to.

The landlord came round on Thursday with his clipboard and stared at the wall for a long time. He asked whether I meant to keep it or whether he should send a man with white emulsion. I said I'd think about it. He wrote something down, tapped the clipboard twice, and said he'd decide when the next tenant complained. I have been thinking about that more than is reasonable.

Come up in June. Bring the good pencils and the cheap wine. We'll stand on the balcony with the whole grey estate spread below us, and we'll pretend it's Paris until the 47 bus rattles past and ruins it.
