Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the words la vie est belle written in a thin, black, serif-style script across the outer upper arm. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the ink sits on smooth skin against a plain pale background. The composition is close and cropped, with a dark pineapple print fabric on the left and a window on the right.

The net came up heavy at four, and Yves swore at it in the dark the way his father had, a curse for every knot. Nobody on the Marie-Thérèse slept past the turn of the tide that winter, and the cold got into the gloves before it got into the bones. Gaspard, the skipper, hauled the last of the mesh over the gunwale with his bad shoulder and looked at the empty sorting trays as if they had personally insulted his mother.

He had a habit of saying it when the catch was thin. La vie est belle, he would announce to the gulls, flat as a dropped plank. Yves had taken it for mockery for his first two seasons. The words had been painted in white on the wheelhouse door by a previous owner, and the paint had blistered and flaked until only the tail of the last word was clear, like a sign on a road nobody used any more. Gaspard never repainted it. He said a man should be able to read his own irony from the bridge.

In February a squall came in off the Channel and took two floats and the spare fuel drum. They limped into Boulogne at dusk with the pumps going and nobody speaking, and Yves stood on the quay watching the tarpaulin snap over the hold while his hands stopped shaking. Gaspard came up beside him, lit a cigarette, and said nothing at all for a long while.

The next morning the sea lay flat and pale as skimmed milk, and the boats went out again. Yves found the grease pencil rolling loose in the chart drawer and, while the skipper was below, he wrote the words small beneath the old white paint, in letters the spray would not wash away.
