Script quote along the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person's neck and shoulder, showing a fine line script tattoo that reads Love me for who I am. The words run in a slight upward curve along the top of the shoulder, close to the collarbone, with thin, even strokes and little shading. The plain background and dark top keep the focus on the lettering.

Dear Tomasz, they have kept me on the bench at Pell Bridge since Tuesday, which leaves me long hours to watch the clerk's pen. Mr Hallam writes every entry in a copperplate hand so even it could be typeset, but yesterday he stopped over my papers, lifted the nib and blotted a line that had gone wrong. I saw the ink bloom grey through the paper before he covered it with his thumb. I keep thinking about that small mistake and how careful he was to hide it.

Mother's letters always began the same way, with the loops of her capital letters running long under the line. She taught us that a good hand should lean forward, like someone walking into wind. When you wrote from the far side last spring you had lost the lean entirely, and I read your letter sitting up straight at the kitchen table, looking for the place where you had stopped sounding like yourself. I found it in the last line, where you asked me to stop trying to make you smaller so that the rest of the family would be comfortable.
Hallam came to the bench this morning and handed my papers back without a word. Across the top, in red, was the word admitted. Beneath it, in his tidy hand, he had copied out the line I wrote in the margin of the form, the one about wanting to be known rather than approved. He had not needed to do that. I think it was a kindness, or a joke he did not want to make aloud.
So I am crossing with the papers, and I am sending this ahead on the post cart so you have it before I arrive. Read it slowly and lean into it. Love me for who I am, I wrote, and I meant every word, with the capital I standing up straight like a post at the edge of the water. Your loving sister, Ilse.
