Labelled teeth illustration on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm carrying several tattooed tooth illustrations in black ink. The main row of molars is drawn with fine line work and cross hatching, with letters A to G and the label Fig. V beside them, in the style of an antique anatomical plate. Two smaller single teeth and a small hatched shape sit lower on the arm, with the labels B, C and X, and the skin is evenly lit against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The drawer in the back office of St Brannock's had seven small brass handles, one for each letter, and nobody on the night shift opened the bottom one. Mrs Pascoe, who had mopped the wards there for forty years, gave Tamsin the rule on her first night. You count what comes up from theatre, not what the drawer holds. Then she went home on the last bus and did not say why.

Tamsin counted. Every Thursday a steel tray came down in the lift with the teeth pulled that week, and every Thursday there were one or two more than the form said. She laid them out on the blotter in rows, sketched each one with a sharpened pencil, and labelled them the way the old anatomy books did: a, b, c beside the roots, and a small Fig. V in the corner for whoever came after her.

In March there were eight. The eighth was no bigger than a grain of barley, and when she lifted it the blotter felt warm underneath. She put it in the bottom drawer without deciding to, and the handle clicked the way it never had before. In the morning the tray was empty, the form was signed in a hand she did not know, and on the blotter someone had drawn a small cross beside a tooth Tamsin had not yet finished.

Tamsin still counts. She has never opened the bottom drawer, and she has never once been short.
