Four arrows running down a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four parallel arrows run diagonally down the forearm, each with feathered fletching at the top and a diamond or geometric arrowhead at the bottom. The linework is thin and even, with dots and small beads spaced along the shafts. The design is in black ink only, shown against a plain grey wall with the forearm lit warmly.

Dear Owen,

The shop has been wet for three days and the glue won't set, so I have had the bench to myself and time to think about your arrows. You left them on the nail by the door, the four you never took. I finished the fletching on the last one this morning: goose feathers, split and bound with thread the colour of tar, and the heads cut from tin sheet by Mr Hale at the forge, each filed to a diamond so it would sit true in a crosswind off the bay.
Dad would have sniffed at the diamonds. He said a point should be a point and nothing fancy, but you always wanted the shafts to look like they were going somewhere fast. I strung a bead on each one at the lengths you marked in chalk, and a dot of black between them, so when you hold them up to the window you can count the days the way you counted tides when you were small.
The Harbour Master's boy came by with word that the Marisol is in at Lisbon and sails again on Thursday. I have packed the four arrows in oilcloth with the linen, though I cannot think what a sailor does with an arrow on a ship except lose it overboard or make the cook laugh.
If you must go to sea with nothing but a knife and a wage, you may as well carry something that flies straight. Come home by the spring tide, or send word, and do not let the Portuguese cooks feed you only fish.
Your loving sister, Ada
