Lace and rose tattoo on the back of a hand
Blackwork · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand and wrist rest on a white paper towel, with a dark ornamental lace pattern in black linework covering the back of the hand and wrist. A large rose in red and magenta tones, outlined in dark blue, sits over the centre of the wrist, with shading that gives its petals depth. In the background, a black and grey rose is visible on a board at the top right of the frame.

The lace-maker's granddaughter had been told not to go past the broken gate, where the old keep stood with its roof gone and nettles growing through the hearth. Her grandmother said the lords who had lived there were long dead and their debts had gone with them, but the bobbins came from somewhere, and every spring a new spool appeared on the step with black thread wound so tight it rang when flicked.

Mari went up anyway, the spring she turned twelve, carrying a crust and a bent pin. In the great hall a woman sat at a frame made of bones, working a pattern that ran across the flagstones and up the walls like frost. Her hands were quick. Where the lace met the stone it had grown into the mortar, dark and ornamental, and it climbed the arm of the chair toward a single rose that had been cut from the wall and hung in the middle of the air.
"You've come to learn the pattern," the woman said, without looking up. "Everyone does, eventually. Sit."
Mari sat. The lesson took all afternoon. She learned that every loop had to be closed or the design would unravel back into the wall, and that the rose would only keep its red if someone worked the lace beside it, so the colour could pass from one to the other. When the light went amber Mari pulled a thread too hard, and the rose shivered and dropped a single petal, bright as a cut.
She carried that petal home in her fist. Her grandmother took one look at the black lace already blooming across the back of her hand and sighed. "Well," she said, "now you'll have to finish it."
