Rose and lace design on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey rose sits on the wrist, with a lace-like ornamental pattern spreading across the back of the hand and up towards the wrist. The shading is smooth and layered, with soft grey tones giving the petals depth. A second shaded rose is visible at the top right of the frame, on a separate surface, and the hand rests on white paper towel.

Mrs Hannah Pell had worked bobbins in the upper room over Lister Street for thirty years, and she knew a bad pattern by the sound the machine made. On the Thursday the stationmaster's wife came up the stairs with a drawing folded in her glove: lace wanted for a christening gown, a rose at the centre and a border of ferns running out from it like frost on glass.

"Not a rose," said Hannah. "Roses are for funerals and fools."
But she took the drawing anyway, and by the Saturday she had the rose worked in black silk on a ground of Nottingham net, petal over petal, shaded with a finer needle so each leaf held its own grey. The woman from the station brought the gown back for mending on Monday with a face like wet paper. Her husband had taken the 6.40 to Derby and not come home, and the telegram said only that he had gone on.
Hannah didn't ask. She sat at the frame until the light went, working the border tighter at the cuff, where a hand rests when it is holding something it cannot put down. When the gown was finished she sewed one black rose into the hem where no one would see it unless they lifted the cloth.
Months later a small parcel came up the stairs, posted from Derby. Inside was the same drawing, and beneath the ferns someone had written in pencil: Keep the rose. I am on the late train.
