Back in the kitchen the range ticked and settled, and on the table lay the corset her aunt had left behind, its black lace gone soft as cobweb along one edge.

Aunt Winifred had made stays for the ladies in Hexham until her eyes gave out. She had taught Nell to set eyelets with a bone awl and to cross the laces so the tension ran even from hem to hem. "Lace it like you mean to come back for it," she used to say, though she never explained what she meant.

On the third night of snow, Nell pulled the corset on over her coat and stood before the scullery window. The beaded drops along the hem swung like frozen rain. She drew the laces through the eyelets with a sound like a sharp breath, tightening them until the old fabric creaked, and found the bow still tied at the bottom where Winifred had finished it, two loops neat as the day they were sewn.

In the morning the gate to the lower field had frozen shut. Nell took her aunt's scissors, cut a length of ribbon from the spare curtain, and laced the gate closed against the wind. Then she loosened it again, so the milk van could still get through.
