Lace-edged heart outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A heart outline is framed by a scalloped, lace-like border with small loops and droplet details along the edges. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with some soft grey shading along the inner contour. The heart fills most of the frame on a light-skinned forearm, with a white paper surface behind and a partial dark mark at the top left edge.

The card has ridden in your sea chest since Falmouth, wrapped in oilcloth beside the sextant, and by the time you open it off Ascension Island the paper has gone soft as cloth. Your mother cut the border herself with her embroidery scissors, one scallop at a time, because the stationer wanted a shilling for a printed one with the same loops. You never warned her about the Bay of Biscay. Her handwriting has bled into a grey halo around the heart, and the little droplets at its point have dissolved into dots.

Pengelly, the bosun, watches you from the rail while you read it twice. He has a daughter in Padstow who sends him nothing but cuttings from the parish magazine. "Bad news?" he asks. You tell him it's only the damp. Near the foot of the page, under the crease, your mother has written that the middle is left empty on purpose, so you can fill it with whatever you have lost on the way out and post it back when you're home.
So through the middle watch you sit on an upturned bucket with a stub of pencil and try. The first loop becomes the morning the Trade wind died and the sails hung like wet washing. The next is the flying fish that landed on the deck off Cape Verde, and the one after is Pengelly teaching you the knots without once raising his voice. You run out of loops before you run out of days. The droplets you save for the coast.
When the bell goes you hand the card to Pengelly and ask him to hold it up to the lamp. The light comes through the empty heart and throws its lace shadow across the planks, scallop by scallop, all the way to your boots. He squints at it for a long while, then hands it back and says nothing at all, which you take as the best review it could have had.
