Nell had the lamp turned low so the wick would last until the last shift came up the lane, and the shirt across her knee was the third that week with the elbow gone. She threaded the red needle by feel, wetting the end of the cotton the way her mother had, and pushed it through the calico along a line of tacking she'd chalked in a shape that wasn't a patch at all.

Her husband had laughed when he saw it on the table. "Sewing hearts on the workwear now, is it?" Tom said, hanging his cap on the nail by the door, coal dust still grey in the creases of his neck. "Nobody down Harrow Drift will notice a heart under a pit shirt." She told him the men noticed everything, which was why she'd made the dashes small enough to hide under a sleeve. He didn't argue. He sat on the step and pulled off his boots one at a time, slowly, the way he did when his back had been bad.

She stitched the last dash while the kettle ticked on the range. Each stitch went down through the old thread and up again, and by the time she reached the bottom point of the heart the cloth had gone quiet under her fingers. The needle was still in the calico, one red end showing, as if she'd meant to finish it later.

Tom came back in, rubbing his hands, and lifted the shirt to the lamp. He ran his thumb along the dashed outline and said nothing for a while. Then he drew the needle out, tied off the thread with two neat knots, and let a loose loop trail over the edge of the table, a loose end for her to pick up in the morning.
