Lace garter mandala tattoo on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a lace-like garter design with a scalloped band across the top, a central mandala-style motif and fringed chains ending in small diamond shapes. The linework is fine and dense, with stippled dotwork shading adding depth to the scallops and central panel. It is entirely black ink on a bare thigh, with a navy skirt and part of a hand visible at the top of the frame.

The last of the jet beads went on at a quarter to midnight, and Ada Penhallow bit the thread before she let herself sit back on the upturned crate. The winter quarters smelled of diesel, damp canvas and the sweet rot of straw under the horse trailers. Somewhere past the fence a dog barked at nothing. She held the band up to the lamp and turned it slowly, the way her mother had taught her to check a hem for mistakes.

It was a garter for Marisol, who had worn the same blue sequin one for eleven seasons and had asked, quite politely, for something that would not catch on the rigging. Ada had drawn the pattern herself on brown paper, fans of scallops stacked over a mandala like a rose window, then chains dropping from the hem in fine lines, each ending in a small diamond of glass. Her mother had called them spindles. Ada had spent three nights stippling the centre panel with a pin and a pot of ink, one dot at a time, until the whole thing had the look of frost on a window.
Silas Dorrigan came across the mud at one o'clock with his collar up and a letter folded in his fist. The company was going to a man in Leeds who wanted the big top for a supermarket car park. The ponies were already sold. He stood at the edge of the lamplight and asked what the garter was for, as if he had only just noticed she was working.
"For whoever is still here to wear it," Ada said.
When he had gone she hung the finished piece from a nail on the tent pole. She had left the very last chain bare, its diamond drop unset, because a thing that is finished is a thing that ends, and she was not ready for the season to end yet. The lamp swung. The one open loop caught the light and held it.
