Ornamental filigree tattoo across shoulder and chest

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's shoulder and upper chest are shown, with a black ornamental design spanning from the collarbone over the shoulder point. The design uses fine, delicate linework built into scrolling arches, with rows of hanging drops, small diamond shapes and dots, and a vertical pendant form near the top of the arm. The ink is solid black on skin in a plain, dimly lit setting, and the striped strapless top sits below the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ivy, the lamp at the Assembly Rooms came down this morning on two ropes, and Mr Pell said I was to take the drops off one by one and not breathe on them. There are 214 of them. I counted twice, once on the way up the ladder and again on the way down with my pockets full of brass wire. Each drop has a little diamond cut into its shoulder, and when the light goes through them it throws bits of the ceiling across the floor like someone has spilt sixpences.

The mending was the worst of it. A scroll had snapped clean off where the arm meets the body, and Mr Pell held the two halves up to the window and said they would not take solder without showing. So I filed a new curl from a spare piece in the cellar, a thin thing shaped like a question mark lying on its side, and wired it on in the dark with my tongue between my teeth. He looked at it for a long time. Then he said, "Better than the original," which I do not believe, but I will keep it.

Tomorrow they hang it again over the dance floor for the Coronation supper. Everyone in Harlow Bridge will come in their good shoes and not look up. That is how it goes with ornaments: nobody notices the work unless it fails, and I am quite content with that. Write back and tell me the bus fare from Leeds is still a shilling, and whether Mam has stopped speaking to the vicar.
