Ornate padlock and rose on an ankle

Neo-trad · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

An ornate padlock with a keyhole and white scrollwork sits on the ankle, with a pink key with a heart-shaped bow looping over its top. A small pink rose with green leaves sits at the centre of the lock, and the padlock is shaded in black and grey with white highlights. Colour is limited to the rose, the key and its ribbon, and the design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate at Hollin Ferry has carried the same padlock for longer than anyone at the checkpoint can remember, and every spring the sergeant decides it has to go. This morning he is leaning on your counter with a pair of bolt cutters, saying the word 'obsolete' as though it were a personal insult. You take the cutters from him and set them down. Then you lift the key ring from the hook behind you, the one with the pink ribbon your mother tied on years ago, and tell him you'll have a look first.

The lock is older than the crossing. Someone filed a keyhole into the brass by hand, and the white scrollwork around its body has been painted over so many times it has gone the colour of old piano keys. The register says the original key went with a family who crossed in the sixties and never came back for the gate. You kneel on the wet concrete with a torch in your teeth and rub at the underside with your sleeve until a small rose shows through the grime, its stem curling round the keyhole as if it was planted there.

The heart-shaped bow on the key slides in without a fight. It turns with a sound like someone letting out a long breath, and the shackle drops open into your palm, cold and lighter than it should be. The sergeant asks how you knew. You tell him you didn't, which is true. Behind the barrier a lorry driver leans on his horn, and the gate that has stayed shut through three decades of paperwork swings wide on its hinges for the first time anyone at Hollin can recall.

You pocket the key and leave the padlock hanging open on its chain, the rose facing the road. Nobody will ask you to cut it now. Nobody will ask what it was locked against, either, and that is the part you find yourself turning over on the long drive home, the way you turn a key you are not yet sure belongs to you.
