Lace heart with purple roses on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A heart-shaped black lace design filled with grey mesh and dotted pearl-like details sits at the centre, framed by purple and pink roses and small black leaves. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the lace depth, while the roses are shaded in violet and magenta. The tattoo fills the frame against a bright turquoise background.

Mags Teague had mended nets for the Skerry fleet since she was twelve, and her hands knew the knots better than her tongue knew its prayers. The winter the herring failed, the boats came home light and the men sat on the harbour wall with their chins down in their collars, saying nothing. Mags took the spent netting down from the loft and picked the tarred cord apart, thread by thread, until it was fine enough to hold a drop of dew.

She worked the mesh into a heart, the way her grandmother had worked a collar for the minister's wife, and she sewed pearls from a broken rosary into the open holes, one at a time. It took her until the first gales of March. When she was done the thing looked like frost on a window, and it was too light to be any use to a fisherman.
The men came up the path to see what the lass had been doing with their nets. They stood in the doorway with salt on their caps and said it was a foolish thing. Then the youngest, Davie Cairns, who had not spoken since his father's boat was lost off the Stacks, touched the edge of it and said the lace was the only thing in the village that had come back whole.
Mags hung it above the door. In May the women grafted purple roses onto the wall beneath it, and the bees found them before the boats had even reached the grounds. Every crew that went out after that came home, though the herring never returned. Nobody paid the lace much mind. It just hung there in the wind, catching the light off the water.
