Ladybird and swirls on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A shaded red ladybird with a black head and dark spots sits between two black linework scroll designs on the ankle. The ladybird has soft grey shading and small highlights, giving it a three-dimensional look, while the scrolls are drawn in thin, unshaded black lines. The swirls frame the insect above and below, following the curve of the ankle.

The ladybird came aboard at Hatton on the third morning, riding the wet mooring line the lock-keeper's boy threw me. Mam always said flicking them off brought bad weather, so I let it walk the length of the tiller and across the brass plate with my name on it, red as a pillar box, its black head bobbing as though it were reading the towpath.

Dad had spent a winter at the ironworks in Stourport, curling bar stock for lock gates, and he always said the scrolls were ferns that had given up growing and decided to be metal instead. Every gate on the Worcester and Birmingham had one, a vine doubling back on itself until the eye could not follow it. I had never thought to draw one on paper, only to watch the paddles pour water through the ironwork and make it hum. The ladybird took all of this in its stride, climbing the gunwale like a sailor up a ratline.
On the fourth day we dropped down through the deep lock below Tardebigge with the gates groaning shut behind us. The water fell a foot at a time, and the ladybird went up the nearest gate, curl by curl, into the iron where Dad's hammer marks still showed. I tied off, counted the paddles twice, and when the top gates swung open and the level met the towpath, I looked back along the iron and found it sitting on a curl no bigger than a thumbprint, red as cinder, waiting for the next lock to take it on.
